BiConnect Lab
University of Milano-Bicocca
We study how humans connect, perceive, and collaborate across social media, XR, and Human–AI ecosystems — and we turn those insights into proactive social AI, educational, and support systems that protect well-being while respecting autonomy and privacy.
BiConnect was initially launched thanks to PsyFuture – Department of Excellence grant.

What We Do...
The BiConnect Lab investigates the cognitive, social, and technological dynamics that shape modern interaction—online, offline, and in mixed reality. We blend controlled experiments, multimodal measurement (from eye-tracking to EEG/fMRI), and computational/user modeling to understand perception, misunderstanding, coordination, and influence in multi-party settings. Our goal is twofold: (1) explain mechanisms (attention, learning, persuasion, inclusion/exclusion) and (2) build healthy-by-design tools—recommenders, tutoring and support systems, and embodied agents—that enhance learning, resilience, and social cohesion.
Focus Areas
Social Media Impact on Users
- User modeling (individual differences, attention, engagement, susceptibility)
- Recommender systems (design, transparency, safety, “healthy feeds”)
- Echo chambers & polarization (dynamics, mitigation)
- Addictions & digital well-being
- Education (media literacy, safe interaction habits)
Social Perception & Integration Processes
- Neuro/physio: fMRI / EEG for social cognition, attention, and affect
- XR multi-user embodiment and presence
- Multimodal analytics: behavior, speech, text, physiology
- Eye movements as real-time windows on attention and intent
Human–AI Interaction
- Perception & pragmatics: how people interpret AI intent, context, and norms
- Misunderstanding: sources, repair strategies, and trust calibration
- Education: AI as coach/tutor; learner modelling and feedback
- Multi-party interaction: AI integration into groups and communities
